Faculty Spotlight: Meet Jeanine Cappuccino

Creativity has always been an essential part of Jeanine Cappuccino’s life. A visual artist, world traveler, and lifelong learner with a degree in Art Education, she loves to share the joy of making art.

Jeanine teaches students of all ages at public and private schools, at the MFA in Boston, and at the Falmouth Art Center. “The artist inside the student is always there,” she says. “I have had young students create artwork in beautifully abstract ways, proportioned figures, and animal drawings and paintings that have made me say ‘I wish I made art like that at your age!' As well as adults who’ve taken up art in retirement, saying they’ve never drawn, who then create a still life that seems like they’ve been drawing for years.”

In the classroom, students are often inspired by famous artists. “For example, I might create a project based on Georgia O’Keeffe’s work,” says Jeanine. “She painted flowers… maybe we take that idea and make something with paper, or perhaps portray a small object very large, as she did. You can take that concept and apply it to every single age… there’s so much we can do with artists that have come before us.”

Jeanine’s own artwork is inspired by travel – recently to Paris, London, and Madrid – and the natural beauty of Cape Cod and the south shore. She loves to take classes herself. “It propels me, gives me fresh ideas… it means I’m always improving my portfolio.” These days, you can find her at the Academy of Realist Art in Boston on weekends.

For Jeanine, art is about community as well as creativity. “We use the visual arts to express our creativity; however, more than the making of things, it’s about being together. Sharing and connecting with each other, our ideas, thoughts, and finding solutions to problems... it’s all a part of being in an art class.”
